Mega Millions Results

Mega Millions is one of America's two largest multi-state lottery games, offering massive jackpots that regularly reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Originally launched in 1996 as "The Big Game" and rebranded as Mega Millions in 2002, the game is now available in 47 jurisdictions across the United States. Mega Millions holds the record for the world's largest single-ticket jackpot ($1.537 billion in October 2018). In April 2025, the game underwent a major format overhaul, increasing the ticket price to $5 and incorporating a built-in multiplier on every play -- eliminating the separate Megaplier add-on purchase.

How to Play

  1. Pick Your White Ball Numbers: Select five (5) numbers from a pool of 1 through 70. These are the white ball numbers.
  2. Pick Your Mega Ball Number: Select one (1) number from a separate pool of 1 through 24. This is the gold Mega Ball number.
  3. Multiplier Assignment: When you purchase your ticket, a multiplier value (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x) is randomly assigned to your play at the time of purchase. This multiplier is printed on your ticket and will multiply any non-jackpot prize you win.
  4. Choose Just the Jackpot (Optional, where available): For $3, get two Quick Pick plays that are eligible ONLY for the jackpot prize (no lower-tier prizes).
  5. Select Multi-Draw (Optional): Play the same numbers for multiple consecutive drawings.
  6. Or Use Easy Pick / Quick Pick: Let the terminal randomly select your numbers.
  7. Check Your Ticket: Watch the drawing or check results on megamillions.com after 11:00 PM ET on drawing nights.

Prize Tiers and Amounts: Mega Millions offers nine (9) ways to win on every $5 ticket. Because every ticket now includes a built-in multiplier, the actual prize won depends on which multiplier value (2x-10x) was assigned to that particular play:

Key Improvement (April 2025): Under the new format, there are NO "break-even" prizes. Every winning ticket pays more than the $5 cost of the ticket. The lowest possible prize is $10 (Mega Ball only with 2x multiplier).

Jackpot Details:

  • Starting Jackpot: $50 million (annuitized value; increased from $20 million as of the April 2025 format change)
  • Annuity Option: Paid as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments (30 total payments over 29 years). Each subsequent payment increases by 5% over the previous year's payment.
  • Cash Option (Lump Sum): Winners may elect a single lump-sum cash payment equal to the total amount in the jackpot prize pool. The cash value is typically 40-60% of the advertised annuity amount.
  • Jackpot Sharing: If multiple tickets match all six numbers, the jackpot is split equally among all winners.

Just the Jackpot Option: Cost: $3 for two (2) Easy Pick / Quick Pick plays

Just the Jackpot is a special play option that provides two Quick Pick number sets, but these plays are eligible ONLY for the jackpot prize. If the numbers match a lower-tier prize (such as Match 5, Match 4+MB, etc.), no prize is awarded. This option is designed for players who want to maximize their chances at the jackpot at a lower cost per play.

Just the Jackpot Rules
  • Only available as Quick Pick (no manual number selection)
  • Two plays for $3 (vs. $10 for two standard plays)
  • Only the jackpot prize tier is eligible -- all eight lower-tier prizes are forfeited
  • The multiplier does not apply (since the jackpot is not affected by the multiplier)
  • Just the Jackpot plays are printed on a separate ticket from regular Mega Millions plays
  • Available at retail locations only (not all states offer online purchase)

Special Rules:

  • California Pari-Mutuel: In California, all Mega Millions prize amounts (including non-jackpot tiers) are determined on a pari-mutuel basis and may differ from the fixed amounts shown above. Prize amounts depend on ticket sales and the number of winners at each level.
  • No Break-Even Prizes: As of the April 2025 format change, every winning Mega Millions ticket pays more than the $5 ticket price. The lowest possible prize is $10.
